Laser Nail Therapy

photo_laser_edited.jpg

Onychomycosis, or nail fungus infection affects the nails and makes them brittle, thick and discolored. The main fungi leading to nail infection in humans are Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum and Candida albicans. These fungi can survive in the dead skin present around the nails, within the nail itself and in the space below the nails. Generally, infection is seen in the nails of the feet. Certain factors increase the risk of fungal infection such as humidity, heat, and lack of sunlight which provides a suitable environment for fungal growth.

Common problems associated with fungal infection of the nails

It is important to receive the treatment for nail fungus as it can cause painful ingrowth within the toenails. Not only does it make the nail cosmetically unappealing but also results in nail plate deformity due to fungal penetration. Sometimes, bacterial infection may also occur in the surrounding toes because the large, thick nail plate may cause physical trauma. Thus, in recent times laser nail therapy has become one of the most popular method for managing nail fungal infection.

Advantages of laser nail treatment

  • Safe, simple to use

  • Minimal or no side effects

  • Does not require patient adherence as done in clinical setting by a trained clinician

  • Effective for patients where systemic anti-fungals do not improve the condition.

Laser systems are painless, safe and a convenient option for onychomycosis. Unlike many systemic anti-fungal lasers do not have any side effects, making them a superior treatment modality.

How does the laser work?

The laser kills the fungus that lives in and under the toenail. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing any damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear and takes 3 - 4 months to become completely clear.

Is there a recovery period?

You will be able to resume your daily activities immediately after the procedure. We advise to keep the nails clean and dry for at least 8 weeks.

Will the fungus come back?

The fungus is killed after one treatment. However, there is a chance of re-infection if there is fungus is still present in your environment. Therefore we recommend using a topical anti-fungal solution to prevent reinfection of your toenails.

When can I paint my nails again after the procedure?

We recommend that you keep nails clean and dry following the procedure for a period of 8 weeks. Following that period, we suggest using anti-fungal nail polish.

Is the procedure painful?

Laser Nail Therapy is a painless procedure that does not require anesthesia. Some patients report warming sensations or a pinprick at the site of the laser application.

How long does the procedure take?

The entire procedure takes less than 45 minutes.

How do I pay for this treatment?

Sheehy Ankle & Foot Centers accepts all major credit cards, cash, and money orders to pay for treatment.

How many laser sessions are required?

Although significant improvement occurs after a single session, we recommend 1-2 sessions. These additional sessions will prevent further progression of fungal infection, in case fungal spores remain. It also helps to minimize reinfection.
